Stick of gum

Chewing gum is an enjoyable treat that is for many kids and adults. Why gum is so yummy and fun to chew? Let’s find out about the history of gum, how it works, why you should throw it away properly, some cool facts, and how it can be GOOD for your teeth.

This is a really interesting history of chewing gum. Chewing gum dates back thousands of years! The Greeks, Mayans, and Native Americans used to make gum from things like tree sap and resin long before that. The gum we know today, however, was not invented until the 1800s.

The science behind the stick

The very first commercially sold gum was produced in the 1840s by a man named John Curtis. He prepared sap collected from spruce trees into a chewy confection that most people liked. Then companies began to add mint and fruit flavors so gum could taste better. At the time, that was how gum flavors were produced, not there are all sorts of gum flavors available at your local store.

Now, let’s discuss how gum works. The mouth produces more saliva when chewing up the gum. Saliva helps remove bits of food and neutralize acids that can damage your teeth. It is also said that chewing gum strengthens your jaw muscles and helps you think and remember better.
